Eshel Ben-Jacob was a physicist who turned towards studying bacterial self-organization. While he was studying that process, he also took some excellent images of the colonies. It does sadly seem like his original website with it's gallary of images has been taken down but they remain scattered around the internet including on this gallary. It's very interesting that this mimics so many patterns that are present in the large scale of nature.
